Kaviraj Singh is one of Europe’s leading young Hindustani musicians. Born in the UK to Dharambir Singh, an esteemed sitarist who studied under Vilayat Khan, Kaviraj was inducted into music early. Santoor master Harjinderpal Singh (a student of Pandit Shivkumar Sharma) has been his longtime guru on the instrument, and he also received extensive vocal training from teachers including Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty.
He has worked with non-classical musicians including Talvin Singh and Nitin Sawhney, and in 2008 became the youngest artist to lead a concert at Darbar Festival. Today he combines santoor and vocal elements in a unique blend, regularly travelling to India to immerse himself deeper into the music and further develop his gharana-blending style.
"Despite being born in a Western country, Kaviraj has stayed closely connected to his roots and brings a fresh perspective of modern British culture and classical Indian tradition to the scene."
Darbar believes in the power of Indian classical music to stir, thrill, and inspire. Explore our YouTube channel, or subscribe to the Darbar Concert Hall to watch extended festival performances, talk and documentaries in pristine HD and UHD quality.
